REMEMBERING THE NAKBA - GFM PHOTO CONTEST May 15, 2010 Every year Palestinians commemorate the Nakba ("the catastrophe"): the expulsion and dispossession of hundreds of thousands Palestinians from their homes and land in 1948. In 1948 more than 60 percent of the total Palestinian population was expelled. More than 530 Palestinian villages were depopulated and completely destroyed. To date, Israel has prevented the return of approximately six million Palestinian refugees, who have either been expelled or displaced. Approximately 250,000 internally displaced Palestinian second-class citizens of Israel are prevented from returning to their homes and villages. This year, to commemorate the Nakba, the Gaza Freedom March is holding a Nakba Day Photo Contest. CONTEST: On May 15th, commemorate the Nakba by holding an event in your town - rally, protest, art exhibit, information session, concert, etc. - and take a photo of your event to submit to the GFM Nakba Day photo contest. Register your event here! PRIZE: The winning photo will receive a $100 donation in your name to the Free Gaza Flotilla, which sets sail in May, aiming to break the siege of Gaza by sea this month! HOW TO SUBMIT: Send your photos in an email to info@gazafreedommarch.org with the subject "Nakba Day Photo Contest". Remember to include extra info you would like us to display on our website (Event description, location, etc.)! View contest submissions. So get creative, capture your events on film, and win a chance to support the international flotilla to break the siege on Gaza! Photos of the 1948 Nakba Nakba Day Events
